History

The Elkhorn Valley is rich with history, scenery and attractions to delight all ages. A trip to area museums throughout the Elkhorn Valley will reveal local history and genealogy. The Elkhorn Valley Museum offers a glimpse into the life of entertainment legend Johnny Carson and the world’s only working square turn tractor. The Willetta Lueshen Bird Library located in the museum offers first-class birding resources that any birder will envy. The Norfolk Arts Center with rotating art exhibits and art classes is just around the corner.

The region also offers a world-class fossil dig and exhibit, located in northern Antelope County near Royal. Ashfall Fossil Beds give a glimpse into pre-historic times when saber-tooth deer and three-toed horses roamed the region. A few miles from Ashfall is Zoo Nebraska, home to Ruben the Chimp, tigers, wolves and cougars.

Antelope County is home to one of the last working flourmills in the country, and the Pierson Wildlife Exhibit. This is one of the largest and most interesting trophy collections in the world. The drive-in theater in Neligh is still a hot spot on most summer nights.

The Elkhorn Valley is also home to Nebraska’s first winery. Cuthills Vineyards offers award-winning wine, tours of the vineyard and a summer music festival. The Willow Creek State Recreation Area and the nearby Missouri River Recreation Areas offer camping, boating, fishing and Lewis & Clark history. Private hunting preserves offer the best in bird and deer hunting.

Visitors can find lodging to meet any need and taste, so come often. We love being your hosts. There are plenty of things to see and do in Elkhorn Valley.
